Get ready for Christmas with these awesome laser cut DIY ornaments from Trotec Laser Australia – perfect to hang on the Christmas tree.

Preparation

Used material:

  • 1/4 sheet TroGlass Clear 3 mm (Ref. 121800) and/or
  • 1/4 sheet TroGlass Satins (Ref. 117034)
  • Ribbon for hanging the decorative elements

Machine used:

  • Speedy 360
  • 80 watts
  • 2″ lens
  • Nozzle with big hole diameter
  • Acrylic cutting table

This sample can be made on any machine from the Speedy laser engraver series.

Step by Step

Step 1: Design

Use our template “christmas_decoration”. Please pay attention to the thickness of the material and adjust the insertion slots for the two little trees accordingly if necessary. Now import the pdf file into Ruby in the “”Manage”” area. In order to achieve a better depth effect when engraving TroGlass clear, this is done mirror-inverted on the reverse side. However, if you want to engrave the material on the top side (e.g. for better readability on TroGlass satins), then mirror the entire file. With “Create job” you then send the design to the “Prepare” area.

Step 2: Laser process

Remove the film on the top of your material, the protective film on the back is left on the TroGlass. Now place the acrylic sheet in the laser machine. Cover the rest of the work surface well for the best possible vacuum. Place the job in the appropriate position and make all adjustments. Our suggested parameters may vary depending on the machine used and the available laser power. Then send the job to the laser by clicking on the “”Push to Laser”” control panel. Then start the laser process.

Step 3: Assembly

After the laser process, you can wipe the material surface with a soft cloth if necessary. Now remove all parts from the laser. The two little tree stands are put together with the matching base plate for each. All remaining elements can be prepared for hanging with a decorative ribbon.+

Combine wood and LaserLeather to create an Easter decoration.

Preparation

Required material:

  • Solid cherry wood, 600 x 300 x 5 mm.m
  • LaserLeather, silver/red, approx. 500 x 80 mm
  • Double-sided adhesive foil, approx. 500 x 80 mm (needed for gluing on the LaserLeather)

Machine used:

  • Speedy 360
  • 80 Watt
  • 2″ Lens
  • Nozzle with small hole diameter
  • Aluminium grid table or the honeycomb cutting support

Of course, the decoration can also be made with another machine of the Speedy laser engraver series. Adjust the parameter settings according to your machine.

Step by Step

Step 1: Import the design

Create your own design or use our free downloadable template. The job can now be sent to the laser with the settings below.

Upload both the pdf template for the wood “chicken_wood” and for the LaserLeather “chicken_laserleather” using the “import file” command in Ruby.

Step 2: Laser process solid wood

The wooden panel can now be placed onto the laser bed. Cover the remaining processing area well to obtain an optimal vacuum and thus a uniform laser result.

Select the design template “chicken_wood”, mark the entire graphic and then click on “Create job”. Now you can select the “solid wood cherry – engraving dark” parameter from the material database. If necessary, you also have the option of adjusting the parameter settings individually. For the “Processing rules”, please make sure that the “inner geometries first” function is selected. This means that the inner cuts are executed first. Place the graphic on the workspace and send the print job to the “queue”.

Our suggested parameters may differ depending on the laser machine used and the available laser power.

Close the machine, make all necessary settings and start the laser process.

Step 3: Laser process LaserLeather

Apply the double-sided adhesive foil to the back (= red side) of the LaserLeather. This allows the individual elements to be easily and accurately glued to the wooden figures.

Now place the LaserLeather in the laser unit with the silver side facing up. Cover the rest of the processing area well in order to achieve optimal suction performance and an even laser result.

Now select the “chicken_laserleather” design template and the corresponding parameters for the “LaserLeather” from the material database. Of course, you can also make the parameter settings individually.

Again, our suggested parameters may differ depending on the laser machine used and the available laser power.

Close the machine, make all necessary settings and start the laser process.

Step 4: Assembly

If necessary, carefully clean the cut parts with a soft, slightly moistened cloth.

Peel off the protective film from the back of the LaserLeather elements and glue the individual parts onto the different wooden chickens one after the other. The figures are glued on the front and back side respectively.

Now insert the chickens and the grasses into the slots provided. The arrangement is freely designable. In the set with the smaller chickens, you can optionally use the lettering “Happy Easter” instead of a chicken.

Following on from our previous post, if you’re a customer looking for the best material for your memorial plaque, or a business looking to have safety signage erected onsite, your main question will probably be: “What’s the best durable material to use in my plaques + signage”? With so many options it can be difficult to know what is best to use for your situation. Here we will show you a range of material options, finishes you can expect, and the appropriate uses for them.

We will start with the various metal materials available.

METALS

Traditionally, external plaques or memorial plates and smaller corporate signs have been made of brass, stainless steel or gold stainless steel. More recently anodised aluminium has been increasing in popularity. Each have their own unique benefit and usage, as well as how to mark the signs.

Brass
Brass is a regular favourite. This is done by either brass casting, where the sign content is created on another machine (such as laser engraving into wood), and then the brass is moulded, or by a brass plaque (say A5 size) being created and then details etched onto the plaque.

Both laser and mechanical engravers are used to create the details on the actual sign / plaque.

The benefits of brass are it’s durability and look and feel, and it’s cons are it tarnishes quite easily.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel, whether in silver or gold, is an extremely durable solution for utilising externally. Stainless Steel comes in various grades (quality), and thicknesses.

A great benefit of Stainless Steel signage is that it won’t tarnish and is extremely durable.

Information can be either laser engraved or mechanically engraved on the material. Fiber marking the information on the material will ensure a greater longevity than using a Co2 laser machine then filling with Cermark or a similar material.

Anodised Aluminium

This material has grown in popularity the last few years given it’s durability, the fact that it’s lightweight and range of colours that are available.

Anodised Aluminium is hard wearing, maintenance-free and adaptable for applications including signs, rating plates, control panel fascias and labels. The quality surface layer will not crack, peel or chip and can be exposed to sunlight with full UV stability.

This material also comes in a range of thicknesses to suit your requirements, and can be either Co2 laser engraved or fiber marked depending on the finish you were after.

AlumaMark®

AlumaMark® is a specialised aluminium designed to be laser marked using lower power settings, it is ideal for the production of plaques, awards, signs and nameplates. The difference with this material is that using a CO2 laser you can permanently create black graphics, and it’s perfect for photographic reproductions. There will be no metal marking spray, tapes or additional processing required which makes it a cleaner item in both production and for the customer.


With so many different plaques + signage material options made out of metal, it’s a great idea to double check where you will be fixing the sign and making sure it will suit the surroundings, as well as how you are planning to affix it to the area.

Bouquet made from wood and acrylic

STEP 1

Step 1: The design

Create your own design or import our template. If required you can adapt it to your requirements. Send the base plate job for laser cutting to the laser using the below driver settings.

Step 4: Laser engraving and laser cutting the “grass”

The next step is to put the dark green transparent TroGlass onto the acrylic cutting grid of your laser machine. Use the 2″ lens for this and all following tasks for this application. Laser engrave and cut the design with the following parameters, which will vary depending on laser machine and available power.

Put the maple veneer sheet into the laser, and carefully cover the rest of the engraving table with paper. Then cut the blossoms using the following parameters:

Tip:

If you cut the entire sheet, focus on the middle of the material to compensate for any differences in thickness.

STEP 9

Step 9: Assembly

Put the stem into the base and decorate it with the blossoms. Depending on your design you can combine large and small blossoms. Finally, position the grass into the base, and this inventive Mother’s Day bouquet is ready.

Handicraft tip:

Twisted blades of grass are good for creating an eye catching piece. To make these, position the “blades of grass” into a bench vice or another heat-resistant holder. Take a hot air gun and carefully heat the filigree grass, then deform and twist the hot acrylic.

Important: Wear gloves when working with hot acrylics to avoid burns

Hold the acrylic in place until it is cooled down. With a little practice, you can create impressive designs.
